May 12 - 2012 Moms’ Run + Family Fun Day, Celebrate moms at the ninth annual Moms' Run + Family Fun Day with a 5k race plus an after-party with food, games and activities for children and families. Admission to Family Fun Day is free for race participants; $10 per family for non-race participants. Proceeds from this event benefit the Ruth Rhoden Craven Foundation for Postpartum Depression. The race begins at 8 a.m. at Blackbaud Stadium on Daniel Island and is immediately followed by Family Fun Day from 9 a.m. to noon. May 28 – All Charleston County Waterparks Open Daily through August
June 5 (8-10 am) & June 6 (8:30 - 10 am) - Learn to Crab with the Charleston Parks Conservancy, Daniel Island Waterfront Park Pier, 101 River Landing Drive on Daniel Island, Cost: $20 per person. Learn about the South Carolina swimmer, Callinectes sapidus. Each participant will receive a drop net to rig and take home after the class. Bait is supplied. Class is catch and release, but if you want, bring a cooler to take home crabs larger than 5 inches. All participants must be registered. Children ages 5 and up are welcome to register but must be accompanied by a paid and registered chaperone age 18 or older. Must pre-register; class size is limited. June 9 (10-12:30 pm), The Art of Animal Anatomy with Becca Barnet, Hazel Parker Playground classroom, 70 E. Bay St., Charleston, Cost: $35. Join the Charleston Parks Conservancy to investigate animal anatomy and function, starting from the inside out. The skeletons of the animals will be the basis for the armatures of the sculptures. Children will learn how animals use their bodies to find food and shelter and defend themselves from predators. Use mostly recycled materials to create creatures based on the way real animals work. Bring a picture of your favorite animal and any recycled materials you may want to use. Ages 7 and up. Register online at www.charlestonparksconservancy.org. June 14 (6-7 p.m.) Woodland Fairy Boxes with the Charleston Parks Conservancy, Hazel Parker Playground classroom, 70 E. Bay St., Charleston, Cost: $15. Let your little ones create their own woodland fairy box. With the Charleston Parks Conservancy, they'll take a nature walk and collect everything they need for the perfect fairy home: leaf boats, moss carpet and seed decor along with dining sets from corks and spools. Dress for a mess. Ages 4 and up. Parents may stay and create their own boxes, but only if they register. Register online at www.charlestonparksconservancy.org.
