How Sex Can Count As Exercise

It’s February, the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day and maybe focus a little more intensely on our “loves.” So, why not ask the questions: Can sex be considered part of our daily exercise routine? While calorie counting, can I subtract those I left behind in the bedroom?

After reading this, you may want to do just that!

After a hard day of work, the last thing many women have on their minds is having sex. But if you consider all of the health benefits, you may be more easily convinced to shed some clothes and slip away with your spouse for a little one-on-one. Not only does lovemaking with your other half make you feel more connected emotionally, it’s been shown to work wonders on the heart, relieve stress, boost your immunity and lower blood pressure.

According to a Queens University in Belfast study, men who have sex three or more times a week can cut their risk of heart attack in half. The study also reports that regular sexual activity will also halve your man’s chance of suffering a stroke.

Most women can relate to a tough day of screaming kids (or bosses). But instead of taking your stress out on your kids, sneak between the sheets for some great stress relief! Although countless studies have shown that sex is a great way to relieve stress, we don’t need a doctor to tell us this to be true…it’s evident right away!

A study out of Pennsylvania’s Wilkes University found that having sex once or twice a week boosts the immune system by 30 percent. So with all those germs our kids are coming home with, who doesn’t need another line of defense?!

But let’s talk calories…based on a woman weighing 150 pounds, kissing burns 68 calories per hour; massaging burns 80+ calories per hour; having sex burns 144+ calories per half hour; and making out burns 238+ calories per half hour. The key to burning more calories is getting your heart rate up and making the activity last! The hotter it is and the longer it lasts, the more calories you burn!

So now you ask: how can exercise affect my sex life?

There are a few key components that will aid in making the most out of your make-out sessions.

1. Flexibility. The last thing you want in the middle of making out with your husband is for that hamstring to start cramping. Try stretching regularly to avoid such a catastrophe! Potassium also aids in eliminating cramps. Add a banana to your daily diet and drink plenty of water.

2. Core. Your core muscles tend to work the hardest during sex. Make that core strong by getting in some planks and crunches. When planking, keep those elbows under your shoulders, pull that navel into your spine and keep your neck in neutral position. Try holding three full planks for 30 seconds to a minute three times a week. For traditional crunches, support your neck with your arms while keeping your elbows out to the side allowing your abdomen region to do the work! Exhale as you reach for your knees, and inhale as you lower to the ground. Do three sets of 25 crunches three to four days a week.

3. Aerobic Stamina. Your muscles are ready, but now you’re out of breath. Change that by increasing your cardiovascular activity during the week. If you’re currently sedentary, start by walking. When you’re able, pick up the pace and take that walk to a jog. Get at least 20 minutes of cardio in at each daily session. Your heavy breathing should subside pretty quickly and be replaced with more enjoyment.

In general, people who exercise have more confidence and feel sexy. Sex appeal can lead to more frequent and better quality sex. Feeling sexy makes lovemaking that much better! So try these tips above and take your quality time with your spouse to a whole new level!
