Spotlight: Burke Lake Park - DC Metro2011-05-31 00:00:00
A review of one local kid-friendly “spot” in the DC area.
by Courtney Richardson One of my family’s favorite parks has finally reopened its facilities for the spring/summer seasons- Burke Lake Park, in Fairfax. We recently visited the park and were reminded of all the reasons we love it… “Burke Lake Park's 888 acres feature: A 218-acre lake with fishing, boating, rowboat rental, camping, a miniature train, a carousel, outdoor volleyball courts, open fields, an 18-hole par 3 golf course, clubhouse with snack bar and driving range, disk golf, horse shoe pits, an ice cream parlor, picnic areas with grills, 3 playgrounds, trails, amphitheater, and miniature golf course.” Our kids particularly enjoy the train ride on an adorable miniature train that runs (on real tracks) through the forest. The train ride is much longer and less expensive ($2.50), not to mention more authentic, than the ones you can take in some of the local malls. The carousel, as well, is a great value for the low cost ($1.75), and the kids love it.There is also a nice playground and a sweet little ice cream shop that serves hotdogs, snacks, and delicious ice cream cones. Also a must-do. The park features acres more of fun activities and trails. Enough to keep your family busy all day. Camping is available, and the park also hosts picnic groups and birthday parties. The park is open from sunrise to sunset. Facilities are only open on weekends until Memorial Day weekend, then daily through Labor Day. There is no charge for Fairfax County residents. Non-county residents are charged on weekends and holidays only, April through late October. The cost is $10.00 per car. This is one of the best parks in the D.C. area, for sure. Definitely worth checking it out! Burke Lake Park 7315 Ox Road Fairfax Station, Virginia 703-323-6600 print article |
